Early Christianity

Spirituality is the belief that there is something greater than yourself.  In Christianity we believe that there is one God and he is the creator of all things.  Some of the characteristics of the early Christians discussed in Ignatius’ letter is that you have to have complete faith and trust in God and that you live your life to die.  When Ignatius was a prisoner and writing to the romans one of the things that he kept telling them to do was pray.  He was telling them to pray that he shall attain martyrdom and for them to pray for the church.  Martyrdom is the death and suffering of someone who is killed because of their religious or other beliefs.  The main theme of his letter to the romans though is that he wants to die he desires to die so that through his death he shall attain true life.

There are several different characteristics of early Christianity that us described in the Didache.  The first several chapters talk about how you have to follow the commandments.  Its talks about the grave sins that are forbidden and that no mater what you should no do them.  Another characteristic of early Christianity (and even now) are baptisms.  In the Didache it lines out the instructions on how baptisms should be performed, what you should say and how you should do it.  The next characteristic that the Didache talks about is the Eucharist or Communion.  Again it lines out what you are supposed to say concerning the cup and the broken bread, along with the prayer after Communion.  One of the last characteristics of Christianity is fasting and prayer.  Like Ignatius, prayer and fasting is a way of training yourself to for death.  And also, like Ignatius, in the Didache there is a lot of talk about death.  The last main point is that you have to be able to tell the difference between a true and false prophet.  If you can’t then you may end up being led astray by not so good people.
