There are several things, according to Machiavelli, a prince must be to make a monarchy work. The first thing is that a prince should not be afraid to take up arms. He must have the ability to stay on his guard and thinking more of the state instead of being at ease and avoiding hardships and troubles of arms because that could cause him to lose his state. The second thing that a prince should have is a range of qualities. He must be generous and compassionate as well as being cruel and faithless along with sufficiently prideful. He needs all of these and more to be considered praiseworthy and good. The third and final thing is that a prince should be feared instead of being love and its better that way since you really can only be one or the other. You have to inspire fear that does not win you love but also avoids hatred. He is well off being feared not hated as long as “he abstains from the property of his citizens and subjects and from their women” (Machiavelli, The Prince).
According to Machiavelli the best way to found a republic is for one man alone to carry out and organize a government into effect. The legislator who promotes public good, not his own interests, who also prefers his country to his own successors should concentrate all authority in himself. The 2 major implements to preserving a sound republic are the legislator should be absolved from not blamed for an act that could get him accused when the results are good and the administration should not remain in the hands of one individual for a long period of time. One implication for the American attempt to found something in the middle east is to stop because only one person who loves their country but wants to change it can rise up above all others and take control.
